Ethernet Cables Categories Infographic: Cat5, Cat6, Cat7 . . .
Our infographic shows the different categories or 'Cat' versions - Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7, etc - for Ethernet cables giving a summary of their performance so the correct one can be selected.
It is essential to select the right version otherwise the performance of the network on which they are used can be impaired, or you could end up paying for performance you don't use.
Ethernet cables have an associated Cat level that defines the basic performance of the cable.
With so many 'Cat' versions available, it is very useful to know exactly what is what and what's best for any given situation.
Often it might be thought that it is best to opt for the highest 'Cat' but this may not always be needed and can result in unnecessary cost.
Looking at the differences between them, and seeing what performance they can provide, enables the right cable to be selected.
Some years ago, Cat 5 cables were included with many products, but with 1GE (Gigabit Ethernet) being used in many products, Cat5 cables may no longer be appropriate.
Normally Cat 5e, or Cat 6 tend to be the choices that many people opt for.
However for installations where cables are fixed and not easily accessible, higher rated cables may be appropriate to provide future-proofing.
