Phonetic Alphabet Spelling Alphabet Infographic

Infographic detailing the International / NATO phonetic alphabet or more correctly termed the spelling alphabet used to convey letters over voice communications

The phonetic alphabet is used because there is a great possibility of mistaking letters with similar sounds when using voice communications.

The current one known as the International Phonetic Alphabet or even the ITU or NATO phonetic alphabet is the one used to this day.

Introduced around 1956, it has proved to be very reliable and is the internationally accepted, being used by the ITU, NATO, aeronautical services and many more including radio amateurs.

Strictly speaking it should be called a 'Spelling Alphabet' because 'phonetics' is a term used within linguists to record detailed information about the sounds of human speech.
