Rectifier Diode Reverse Voltage Requirements for Different Circuits
Rectifier diodes require different maximum voltage ratings according to the circuit in which they are used and it is essential not to exceed the maximum diode ratings.
Diode rectifier reverse voltage ratings should not be exceeded otherwise there is a distinct risk of complete failure.
Understanding the expected values is critical for any design, so I've summarised them for the basic half wave rectifier as well full wave rectifier configurations.
It's also important to note that it is important to cater for transients that may come along the line.
If the rectifier circuit is likely to be used in association with a mains or power line supply, it could encounter large transients. Often additional protection may be incorporated and / or a margin of three or four times the maximum reverse voltage may be used.
